Chapter 09

Files, Git and terminals

Browse and edit files, review and commit changes, search code and transcripts, preview artifacts and export conversations.

The file tree, and file operations

The explorer shows the workspace with Git state on every row: how many files changed inside a folder, which files are modified or untracked, and what Git is ignoring. Rows update when an agent writes a file.

Right-click a row to open, open to the side, open with another app, reveal in Finder, copy the file, copy its path or relative path, cut, paste, rename, duplicate, move to trash, and create new files and folders.

When a session's output folder differs from its project, the panel labels them: workspace is the session's output folder, project is the original code.

Editing and navigating code

Files open in a code editor with syntax highlighting. Markdown, JSON and other structured formats also have a view mode, a source mode, a split of the two, and a preview. JSON shows parse errors with line and column, and warns about comments and trailing commas.

⌘-click a symbol to jump to its definition, or look up the other places it is used.

  • ⌘clickGo to definition
  • ⌘FFind in the current file or transcript
  • ⇧⌘EFocus the explorer

Reviewing and committing

The source control panel shows staged and unstaged changes and a diff for every file. Diffs render side by side or inline.

What you can do without leaving the workbench
Stage / unstage
Per file or everything at once. You can also discard a file's changes or delete an untracked file; both ask for confirmation and cannot be undone.
Commit
Commit staged changes, commit everything, or commit and push in one action, with the message written in the panel.
Branches
See the current branch, switch branches, and see how far ahead or behind the upstream you are, or that there is no upstream yet.
Pull / push
Pull and push from the panel.
Restore
Roll a single file back to HEAD, staged and unstaged changes together, after an explicit confirmation.

When an operation fails, the panel names the cause, such as local changes that would be overwritten, diverged branches, no upstream, an unfinished merge or rebase, refused credentials or an unreachable remote. Where it can, it offers a fix such as stash-and-pull or pull-with-rebase. The repository is unchanged until you take the offered action.

Previewing what the work produced

Files an agent hands back are listed as artifacts and can be previewed in place: Markdown, JSON, CSV as a table, images with zoom, PDFs, audio and video. Previews are read-only; to edit, open the file in another app. A preview can fill the stage or sit as a side panel.

  • Open in your default app, choose a specific app, or reveal it in Finder.
  • Very long files preview their first several thousand lines; binaries, oversized files and unsupported media show what to do instead.
  • Only artifacts inside the workspace can be previewed.

Exporting a conversation

Export a whole chat, or a single round, to a folder with its text and the images and files that went with it. Progress shows while it packages.
